PATHANAMTHITTA: The retirement of Sub-Inspector Shahjahan from the Kollam West police station did not signify a transition to a leisurely life. Instead, it marked the beginning of an ambitious 2,025km cycling expedition across Kerala aimed at raising awareness about the increasing issue of drug abuse in the state.

On May 31, Shahjahan, a career officer renowned for his dedication to public welfare, embarked on this mission after completing 31 years of service in the police force. The journey began from Pathanamthitta and will conclude at Kasaragod, covering all the districts in the state.

Notably, Shahjahan had earlier undertaken a cycle tour prior to his retirement, which advocated the use of helmets and seat belts. His efforts earned him recognition from Police Chief Loknath Behera. This time, however, the focus is on combating drug abuse.

Speaking about his expedition, Shahjahan said, “Drug abuse is a growing menace that requires immediate attention. I aim to reach out to people in every corner of Kerala and create awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.”

The cycling expedition is being supported by various social organizations and individuals who share the same concern about the issue. Shahjahan has been meeting with school and college students, community leaders, and law enforcement personnel during his journey to discuss the problem and brainstorm solutions.

As the expedition enters its third week, Shahjahan’s tireless efforts are inspiring many across Kerala. The journey serves as a reminder that retirement doesn’t always mean the end of service but can often mark the beginning of a new mission.
