In the lead up to Thiruvonam, falling on September 5, it has been announced that President Droupadi Murmu will be adorning a specially crafted organic handloom sari. This unique piece is intricately woven by K. Raveendran, a distinguished weaver hailing from Peringamala, situated on the outskirts of Kerala’s capital.
The special sari, which will grace the President during her celebration of Onam, showcases a delicate athapoo (floral carpet) motif that embodies the spirit of the festival. The 1-meter pallu (border) of the sari features an intricate leaf design, adding to its charm and cultural significance.
The order for this remarkable sari, along with other significant pieces, came through the Kerala State Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative Society Ltd (Hantex). The society is based in Kalliyoor, Peringamala, and is a part of the wider Jaikish Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative Society.
This news highlights the rich tradition of Kerala’s handloom weaving industry, which continues to flourish and find recognition on national platforms. The use of organic materials in the creation of this sari underscores the focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness that is increasingly becoming a priority in the fashion world.
As Thiruvonam approaches and President Droupadi Murmu prepares to celebrate Onam, attention turns towards the exquisite craftsmanship that goes into creating these traditional Kerala saris. The collaboration between the weaver and the President serves as a testament to the enduring charm of Indian handloom textiles and their cultural significance in contemporary times.
