In the bustling coastal state of Kerala, concerns have been mounting over the safety of pedestrians as fatalities due to road accidents on Zebra crossings are experiencing an alarming increase. Data from the state’s traffic department shows that between January and October 31, 2025, 218 lives were lost while attempting to cross roads on these designated pedestrian crossings.
The situation appears to be critical as a total of 851 pedestrians were killed in vehicle accidents across Kerala during the same period, underscoring the need for immediate attention and action. The figures for 2025 are expected to climb further by year-end, raising even more concerns among road safety experts and officials.
This escalation follows a significant increase in the total number of road accidents reported in Kerala. Up until August 15, 2025, the state recorded a total of 32,658 road accidents, a substantial rise from the 43,910 accidents reported in 2022.
The issue is garnering attention both locally and nationally, with various stakeholders urging for swift and comprehensive measures to address this pressing matter. Local newspapers such as Mathrubhumi have been advocating for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regulations at Zebra crossings, while suggesting improvements in infrastructure and increased public awareness campaigns.
As the year draws to a close, the Kerala government is under pressure to take action and implement concrete solutions that prioritize pedestrian safety and reduce the rising number of fatalities on Zebra crossings. Stay informed for further updates as this critical issue continues to unfold.
