In a concerning development, the districts of Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, serving as the commercial and administrative capitals of Kerala respectively, have been identified as having the most dangerous roads in the state. According to the department of economics and statistics’ ‘Status Report on Road Accidents – 2025’, these districts have recorded the highest number of road accidents among all districts in the state.

The report indicates that Kerala, a state known for its lush greenery and peaceful ambiance, reported nearly 49,000 road accidents annually from 2018 to 2023. Data analysis reveals a worrying trend with Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram consistently reporting the highest number of road accidents during this period.

The steep rise in road accidents is attributed to factors such as heavy traffic congestion, fast vehicle speeds, and careless driving habits among commuters. In 2023 alone, Ernakulam witnessed a 15% increase in road accidents compared to the previous year, while Thiruvananthapuram experienced an even steeper jump of 28%.

The report also highlights that the use of mobile phones, particularly on WhatsApp, during driving is a significant contributor to these accidents. The authorities have urged the public to adhere to traffic rules and regulations for their safety and the safety of others on the road.

As the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continue their political tussle at the national level, this issue remains a common ground where both parties have pledged to address the growing concern of road safety in Kerala.

The government, local authorities, and various stakeholders are now working towards implementing stricter traffic regulations, improving infrastructure, and enhancing public awareness campaigns to tackle the rising number of road accidents in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram.
