As tensions mount over the display of a controversial ‘Bharat Mata’ image, Kerala University witnessed student protests on Tuesday, June 26. Activists from the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) attempted to block Governor Rajendra V Arlekar’s entry to the campus, where he was scheduled to attend a book launch commemorating the Emergency period.

The protests were triggered by the display of the ‘Bharat Mata’ image at the Senate Hall of Kerala University, which sparked student outrage due to its perceived ideological connections with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Just hours prior to the incident, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the state government would formally object to the use of the ‘Bharat Mata’ image in Raj Bhavan functions. This formal objection came amidst a nationwide debate over the display and interpretation of the image.

The controversy surrounding the ‘Bharat Mata’ image is not new, with many viewing it as an ideological symbol associated with the RSS, an organization that has been subject to controversy and debate in India.

As the incident unfolded at Kerala University, Governor Rajendra V Arlekar managed to enter the campus after police intervention. The book launch proceeded despite the protests, highlighting the deep-rooted divisions on this issue.

The current year is 2025, and as this story develops, more discussions are expected on the use of symbols perceived to have ideological connotations in public spaces. Stay informed with The News Minute (TNM) for updates on this ongoing debate.
