In a significant move bolstering its counter-terrorism capabilities, the Kerala Police is set to acquire AK-203 rifles, marking it the first civilian force outside the Indian Army to possess this advanced weapon. The state government has sanctioned ₹1.3 crore for the purchase of these rifles.
The acquisition is part of the Centre’s Modernisation of Police Forces (MPF) initiative aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of State Police forces across India. The AK-203, a member of the latest Kalashnikov series developed in 2010, will be deployed first with elite units such as the Thunderbolt commando force.
The AK-203 is known for its robustness and versatility, making it suitable for various terrains and combat situations. The rifles will reportedly be used to strengthen the police forces’ ability to handle high-risk operations and maintain law and order effectively.
This decision follows ongoing efforts to improve the overall preparedness of state police forces in line with the evolving security challenges faced by India. It is noteworthy that the Centre has been actively encouraging states to modernise their police forces as part of its MPF initiative.
The implementation timeline for the delivery and deployment of these rifles remains unclear at this time, but the development is being closely monitored by various stakeholders.
