KOCHI: In an attempt to combat the steep decline in coconut production and soaring prices in Kerala, the Coconut Development Board (CDB) has formulated a series of schemes aimed at enhancing productivity. The decline has been substantial and is a cause for concern for both farmers and consumers alike.
To address this issue, the CDB is offering subsidies for coconut nurseries and nucleus seed gardens as part of its strategy to boost production. Additionally, a cluster-based productivity enhancement scheme has been introduced, which aims to improve the overall efficiency and yield in coconut cultivation.
Recognizing the need for financial support, the CDB is also providing assistance for expanding the area under coconut cultivation in Kerala. Furthermore, the board is considering the formation of “coconut climbers’ task forces” under a new scheme called “Cocomitra”. These groups, consisting of 10 persons each, can form legal entities like cooperative societies, and will receive a financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh for equipment and mobility support.
The CDB’s efforts come at a crucial time when the coconut sector in Kerala is grappling with production challenges. With these measures in place, the board hopes to revitalize coconut cultivation and stabilize prices in the state.
