Thiruvananthapuram, August 1 (The Indian Express) – In a bid to enforce the state-wide ban on single-use plastic products, scheduled to begin on October 2, the Kerala government has directed Local Self Government Institutions (LSGIs) to intensify their surveillance activities in markets and areas known for high waste generation. The move comes ahead of the Onam festival season, a period characterized by increased consumption and potential waste generation.

The High Court has mandated the enforcement of the ban on single-use plastic products across Kerala, with October 2 set as the deadline. In response to this directive, the Local Self Government Department (LSGD) has issued strict orders for all LSGIs to strictly adhere to green protocols and take stringent action against violators.

With Onam around the corner, a significant festival celebrated in Kerala, the state government is taking extra precautions to ensure waste management and prevent any potential environmental hazards. The increased surveillance will help in real-time compliance monitoring during this period of heightened activity.

The LSGD’s orders emphasize the importance of maintaining cleanliness and adhering to environmental regulations, especially during festive seasons when there is an increase in waste generation. The focus is on ensuring a sustainable and eco-friendly Onam celebration for all residents of Kerala.
