In a heartfelt tribute, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan marked the first anniversary of the passing of Sitaram Yechury, former general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), by highlighting Yechury’s significant influence on political movements in India and abroad.
In a Facebook post, Vijayan recalled Yechury’s indelible impact on national politics and his unwavering support for secular groups. The Chief Minister praised Yechury’s ‘unwavering fighting spirit,’ which was exemplified by his determined efforts to enter Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370, despite facing numerous challenges.
Yechury, who played a significant role in Nepal’s 2006 People’s Movement that led to the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a federal democratic republic, left an indelible mark on Indian politics as well. His spirit was evident even in his posthumous journey, culminating in successful Supreme Court intervention allowing him to visit Jammu and Kashmir.
The tribute by Vijayan underscores the reverence and respect held for Yechury among political circles, particularly in Kerala and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). As the first anniversary of his passing approaches, remembrances of Yechury’s life and work serve as a testament to his legacy and continued influence in Indian politics.
