Thiruvananthapuram, August 2025 — In a significant stride towards more inclusive public employment policies, the Kerala government has recommended the implementation of job reservations for transgender individuals in government jobs. This move was announced by Minister R Bindu during a press conference held recently.

The Higher Education Department has taken this step in collaboration with the Public Service Commission (PSC), which is now being requested to consider this demand. This recommendation, if approved, would mark a landmark achievement for the transgender community in Kerala.

As part of its continued efforts towards inclusive growth and social justice, the state government also plans to organize a job training programme in collaboration with the Knowledge Economy Mission. This initiative aims to equip transgender individuals with the necessary skills required for their new roles in government jobs.

The proposed job reservations come as Kerala continues to lead in promoting gender equality and social inclusion, particularly within its educational institutions. For instance, several universities in Kerala have already introduced gender-neutral hostels and scholarships for transgender students pursuing law degrees (LLB).

The implementation of these policies is expected to foster a more inclusive workforce and pave the way for greater representation of transgender individuals within government agencies. As the PSC deliberates on this demand, stakeholders remain hopeful that the approval will be granted soon, thereby empowering members of the transgender community and enhancing their opportunities for social and economic advancement in Kerala.
