In a groundbreaking move for gender equality within the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Kerala, Sumalatha Mohandas (44) has been elected as the new district secretary of the party in Palakkad. This appointment makes her the first woman to hold this position in the history of CPI in the state.

Hailing from Thottappura in Akathethara, Sumalatha was elected unopposed, taking over from KP Suresh Raj who served three consecutive terms as district secretary. Prior to her appointment, she served as the district assistant secretary. The decision to elect her was reached during a consensus at the CPI state executive meeting last week.

This elevation follows the party’s tradition where the state executive decides on district secretaries prior to conferences. The election of Sumalatha is in line with the party’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and representation within its ranks.

As the new district secretary, Mohandas will oversee the operations of the CPI in Palakkad, a role that comes with significant responsibility and influence. Her appointment is expected to inspire more women to take leadership roles within the party.

The journey of Sumalatha Mohandas within the CPI has been marked by dedication and hard work. Her election as district secretary underscores her commitment to the party’s ideals and the faith the party’s leadership has placed in her abilities. As she takes on this new role, the eyes of Kerala’s political landscape will be upon her as she navigates the complexities of leading one of the state’s key districts.
