In a somber moment, Kerala Health Minister Veena George was seen consoling the family members of Bindu, who lost her life in the recent building collapse at Kottayam Medical College on July 10th. Amidst the tragedy, the state’s Cabinet has approved the construction of a new hospital wing to cater to the growing needs of the medical institute.

As per the report by Ramya Kannan in the Health Matters section, the proposed structure will include a Trauma Center and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for various specialties. This expansion is expected to augment the existing facilities and improve healthcare services within the region.

The Kottayam Medical College, one of the premier medical institutions in Kerala, has been grappling with an increasing number of patients due to its reputation for quality care. The new hospital wing aims to address this issue by providing more space for diagnostic and treatment facilities.

Meanwhile, the building collapse incident has raised concerns about safety standards in construction projects, prompting authorities to investigate the cause behind the tragedy. Preliminary findings suggest that neglect in maintenance may have contributed to the unfortunate event.

In political circles, the Cabinet’s decision to build a new hospital wing at Kottayam Medical College is being hailed as a proactive step towards improving healthcare infrastructure in Kerala. The state government has expressed its commitment to ensuring optimal patient care and safety for all medical facilities under its jurisdiction.

The Cabinet’s approval comes at an opportune time, with the health sector grappling with numerous challenges amidst the ongoing pandemic. Enhancing healthcare infrastructure is considered crucial in strengthening the nation’s response to future health crises while ensuring quality care for all citizens.
