In a move aimed at bolstering the healthcare sector, the Department of Health and Family Welfare has given its approval for the establishment of Innovation Entrepreneurship & Development Centres (IEDCs) in medical colleges across the state. The proposal for these centers was initially put forth by the state chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) in 2022, following a series of discussions at the Directorate of Medical Education and with other stakeholders.
The establishment of IEDCs in government medical colleges and hospitals had been a much-needed initiative given the growing emphasis on innovation within the health and medicine sector. These centers are expected to provide a platform for research, development, and entrepreneurship in the healthcare domain.
Palakkad, one of the districts with a government medical college, is set to benefit from this development. The IEDCs will offer students, researchers, and professionals an opportunity to transform their ideas into viable solutions, potentially revolutionizing the healthcare landscape.
This move aligns with Kerala’s ongoing efforts to promote innovation and entrepreneurship across various sectors. The IEDCs are expected to play a crucial role in fostering a culture of innovation within the healthcare sector, thereby contributing to the state’s development agenda.
As the implementation of these centers gets underway, stakeholders, including Anoop Ambika, officials at NIT-Calicut, and various medical colleges, will be closely monitoring the progress to ensure the successful launch of these IEDCs. With Kerala University of Health Sciences providing guidance and oversight, the aim is to establish these centers in a timely and effective manner.
The establishment of these Innovation Entrepreneurship & Development Centers represents a significant step towards enhancing healthcare services and fostering innovation within the state. As more details emerge regarding the rollout of these centers, updates will be provided accordingly.
