The long-awaited redevelopment project for the Muthalapozhi harbor commenced on Thursday under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the project, which aims to address safety issues and concerns arising from unscientific construction at the current harbor.
The I177-crore project is being undertaken with an emphasis on creating a ‘Green and Blue Port’, prioritizing sustainable practices, marine conservation, and the safety of fishers. This redeveloped harbor will serve as a model for future coastal infrastructure projects in the region.
The Muthalapozhi fishing harbor was commissioned in June 2020, and since then, it has faced challenges due to issues with its initial design and construction. The redevelopment project aims to rectify these problems and provide a permanent solution to the frequent accidents that have occurred at the harbor.
The Muthalapozhi harbor redevelopment is one of several initiatives undertaken by the government under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, which focuses on the development of the country’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The project is expected to be completed within a specified timeline, bringing much-needed relief to the fishers in the Perumathura and Vizhinjam areas who have been directly affected by the challenges at the current harbor.
