In a bid to adhere to the Supreme Court’s directive regarding the shifting of stray dogs from urban areas to shelters, the government of Kerala is contemplating the creation of dog parks. These designated spaces, intended for the housing and care of stray dogs, will potentially involve public participation in their maintenance and monitoring of the dogs’ health and behavior.

The proposal for dog parks has emerged as a potential solution to the current challenges faced by the Animal Husbandry Department in securing suitable land and overcoming local opposition for permanent shelters. In Alappuzha, Kerala, this innovative idea is gaining traction as a feasible approach to addressing the issue of stray dogs in urban areas.

To ensure the successful implementation of dog parks and mitigate potential issues related to land acquisition and local resistance, the government is considering partnerships with private entities or non-profit organizations for the creation and management of these facilities. This collaborative approach aims to streamline the process and facilitate the prompt establishment of dog parks across Kerala.

As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen whether this novel solution will prove effective in addressing the stray dog problem while adhering to the Supreme Court’s directive and ensuring public safety and welfare. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this initiative as they become available.
