In the political sphere of India, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed strong criticism towards the Indian Union Government for hosting Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Vijayan termed the decision as a “betrayal of India’s historic solidarity with Palestine.”

The criticism comes amidst the ongoing visit of Israeli officials, during which India and Israel signed a Bilateral Investment Agreement in New Delhi on Tuesday. The agreement is expected to boost economic ties between the two countries.

Vijayan’s comments contrast with the stance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders who have maintained a diplomatic relationship with Israel. The Israeli minister, Bezalel Smotrich, is known for his extreme right-wing views and is considered a key figure in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The Kerala Chief Minister’s criticism has sparked debate within political circles, with some arguing that India should maintain its historical support for Palestine while others believe in strengthening economic ties with Israel.

Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee, a prominent Indian political party, has also voiced concerns over the visit of Israeli officials and the signing of the Bilateral Investment Agreement. The parliament is expected to discuss the issue in the coming days.

This development comes at a time when India is seeking to strengthen its position as a global leader, with Prime Minister Modi often referring to India as ‘Vishwaguru,’ or the leader of the world. Piyush Goyal, the Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, has emphasized the importance of the Bilateral Investment Agreement in enhancing economic cooperation between India and Israel.
