Thiruvananthapuram, September 5: Dr. Shirley Vasu, a renowned forensic pathologist and the first woman in this role in Kerala, passed away on Thursday in Kozhikode following a brief illness. She was 65.

Throughout her 35-year career as a forensic surgeon, Dr. Vasu conducted approximately 20,000 autopsies and became an unparalleled authority in her field. Her expertise extended beyond the technical aspects of her profession; she also provided valuable insights on the modes of crimes, the weapons used, and the selection of evidence essential for successful prosecutions.

Dr. Vasu maintained a close relationship with the police force, often collaborating with them by either visiting crime scenes or providing assistance at the station when needed. Her knowledge and experience were highly valued by senior police officers who relied on her to gain insights into various aspects of criminal investigations.

While Dr. Vasu’s contributions to forensic medicine are undeniable, her impact reached far beyond the medical field. Her work played a crucial role in ensuring justice was served and upholding the rule of law in Kerala.

The State Government has yet to release an official statement regarding Dr. Vasu’s passing, but it is expected that she will be remembered as a dedicated public servant who tirelessly worked to uncover the truth behind countless deaths, both natural and violent.

In her personal life, Dr. Vasu was known for her humility and kindness. She often spoke of her passion for her work and the importance of ensuring justice for victims of crime. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives she touched during her illustrious career.

The cause of death has not been officially disclosed, but it is believed that Dr. Vasu passed away peacefully in her sleep. Funeral arrangements are still pending at this time.
