In a move aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and facilitating smooth traffic flow, the Kerala High Court has directed the state government and the Transport Commissioner to implement proposals submitted by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) and the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Corporation (TDRL). The court disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed on this issue on July 30, 2025.
The PIL, filed by P.C. Chacko, sought immediate action to widen the road in the East Fort area by acquiring the land behind the East Fort bus station, as suggested by NATPAC and TDRL. The petition also requested the court to direct the government and Transport Commissioner to implement the proposal of erecting three foot-over-bridges with escalators in the East Fort area.
The court’s order comes amidst growing concerns over pedestrian safety and traffic congestion in Thiruvananthapuram’s busy commercial hub. The proposed improvements are expected to address these issues, ensuring safer movement for both pedestrians and vehicles in the East Fort area.
