A concerning trend of electrical accident deaths has emerged in the state, with the number of fatalities due to such incidents doubling compared to the previous financial year. Between April 1 and July 20 this year, a total of 66 people have lost their lives, with eight deaths caused directly by snapped power lines.

The Malappuram district has reported the highest number of these tragedies with three cases, followed closely by Kozhikode with two and Ernakulam, Kollam, and Thrissur each reporting one case. These statistics underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures in handling electrical infrastructure.

G Vinod, the chief electrical inspector with the state electrical inspectorate, has emphasized that a lack of spacers is contributing significantly to snapped conductors. This issue demands immediate attention as it appears to be a common factor across multiple districts.

As we approach the monsoon season, it’s crucial for local authorities and utility companies to prioritize safety inspections and maintenance work to prevent such accidents from occurring further. The BJP’s district committee in Malappuram has expressed concern over the rising number of fatalities and called for swift action to address the root causes of these tragedies.
