Alappuzha, July 19, 2025 — The state water transport department’s ‘Vega’ and ‘See Kuttanad’ tourist boat services have been crafting a success story, delighting both domestic and international travellers with affordable, scenic cruises along Alappuzha’s backwaters. Launched to offer a budget-friendly yet unforgettable visual treat of rural Kerala, the vessels have rapidly become favourites of tourists. They wind through the famed Punnamada backwaters, the tranquil expanses of Vembanad Lake, and the lush paddy fields that line the waterways.

In just over four years since their inception, the ‘Vega’ has transported close to 1.15 lakh tourists, contributing Rs 5 crore to the state water transport department’s revenue. The double-decker See Kuttanad, which offers a unique perspective of the backwaters, has earned Rs 1.55 crore. These figures underscore the popularity of these services among travellers seeking an authentic Kerala experience without breaking the bank.

On board, tourists are treated to traditional Alappuzha dishes like karimeen (pearl spot fish), kappa (tapioca), and kakka erachi (spicy chicken cooked in a banana leaf). The vessels, designed with comfort and safety in mind, provide an enjoyable journey through the heart of Kerala’s backwaters.

Shaji V Nair, Managing Director of the state water transport department, expressed his satisfaction with the success of these services. “We aimed to offer a unique, affordable experience that showcases the beauty of our backwaters and traditional cuisine,” he said. “The response we’ve received is proof that we are on the right track.”

With the tourist season in full swing, the department plans to further expand these services to cater to the growing demand. As the world continues to discover the charm of Kerala, these boats promise to offer a memorable experience for all who venture into the heart of its enchanting backwaters.
