THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The much-anticipated heli-tourism initiative of Kerala has encountered a setback, with the tourism department yet to secure substantial interest from potential helicopter service providers. As of July 16, only one operator has responded to the Expression of Interest (EoI) floated in May.

The initial deadline for the EoI was in June, but it was extended due to a lack of responses. Subsequently, another extension was announced on July 16, indicating that the department is still hopeful of attracting more bidders. If no further valid proposals are received by the extended deadline, the tourism department may consider inviting EoIs again.

The heli-tourism initiative aims to provide scenic flights over popular tourist destinations in Kerala, such as Bekal and Kumarakom. The service is expected to boost tourism and generate employment opportunities in the state. However, the slow response from potential operators has cast doubts on the project’s immediate implementation.

Anil Narayanan, a tourism industry analyst, noted that while the initiative holds potential, it requires careful planning and execution. He suggested that the department could consider offering incentives to attract more operators or streamline the bid process to make it more appealing.

The tourism department remains optimistic about the project and is actively engaging with stakeholders to address any concerns and facilitate the smooth implementation of heli-tourism in Kerala. As the deadline for the third EoI extension approaches, all eyes will be on whether the state can successfully take off its ambitious heli-tourism initiative.

Further updates on this story will be provided as developments occur.
