Health officials are on high alert as the number of influenza virus infections continues to rise in Kerala, with a total of 1,857 cases and 19 deaths reported so far this year. According to data from the State Health Department, during the first nine days of July alone, there have been 382 new cases and six additional fatalities.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a seasonal disease that can be caused by various strains including H1N1, H3N2 (both Influenza A), and Influenza B. The common symptoms of influenza include fever and body pain. However, many cases may go undiagnosed as the symptoms are often similar to those of other common ailments.

To combat the surge in cases, Dr. B Ekbal, a leading virologist based in Kochi, has urged residents to take precautions such as wearing masks and maintaining good hand hygiene. He also emphasized the importance of avoiding crowded places during this time.

In response to the rising number of cases, Kerala’s Minister of Health, Rajeev Jayadevan, has stated that the state government is taking necessary measures to isolate infected individuals and prevent further spread of the virus. He urged residents to seek medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms and follow all health guidelines to protect themselves and others from infection.

As the number of influenza cases continues to rise in Kerala, it remains important for residents to take precautions and stay informed about the latest developments in the outbreak. The State Health Department has set up a dedicated helpline for those who are experiencing symptoms or have concerns about the virus, and encourages all residents to use this resource if needed.
