The Supreme Court has agreed to expedite a hearing on a plea seeking to delay the execution of Kerala nurse, Nimisha Priya, who is currently detained in Yemen. The original listing date was July 14; however, owing to the imminence of the scheduled execution date, which stands at July 16, Senior Advocate Ragenth Basant, representing the petitioner, requested a quicker listing either on July 13 or July 14.

The plea was filed by the ‘Save Nimisha Priya Action Council’ and aims to halt the execution, citing insufficient time for diplomatic negotiations by the Government of India. With the execution date just days away, concerns have been raised about the lack of time for the Indian government to effectively engage in diplomatic discussions aimed at securing a reprieve for Nimisha Priya.

The partial working days bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymalya Bagchi acknowledged these concerns and decided to hear the case on July 13, allowing for a more expedient resolution to the matter.

It remains unclear if and when Nimisha Priya’s execution will take place in Yemen; however, the Supreme Court’s decision to hear the plea is a significant step towards potentially delaying the execution and granting more time for diplomatic negotiations. The nation awaits the court’s verdict with bated breath, as all parties involved work diligently towards resolving this pressing issue.
