In an effort to boost tourism and promote Kerala’s famed backwaters, the state tourism department has announced that the number of traditional boat race events will more than double this year. A total of 14 events are planned for the annual boat race season.

As part of its expansion plan, the state tourism department is set to bring in a private event management company to professionally brand and market the Champions Boat League (CBL). This marks the first time such a move has been made, with the aim of elevating Kerala’s snake boat races at both national and international levels.

The CBL was launched four years ago and is considered a significant part of Kerala’s tourism offerings. The private event management company will be responsible for creating an engaging and immersive experience for both local and international tourists who attend the events.

“We are excited about this new initiative. It is our belief that by working with a professional event management company, we can attract more tourists to Kerala and showcase our rich culture and traditions in a way that appeals to a global audience,” said a spokesperson from the Kerala Tourism Department.

The move is part of a broader plan to elevate Kerala’s famed snake boat races at both national and international levels, with the aim of attracting more tourists. The events will be held in various locations across the state, including Kottappuram and Pandanad-Chengannur, where the Nehru Trophy, one of the most famous boat races in Kerala, is held every year.

The event management company will work closely with the Kerala Race Boat Owners Association to ensure that all aspects of the events are managed professionally and that the traditional spirit of the boat races is preserved.

With its beautiful backwaters, lush green landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Kerala has long been a popular tourist destination. The state government hopes that by expanding the number of boat race events and attracting more international tourists, it can further boost tourism in the region and contribute to the local economy.
