In a move to contain the potential spread of the Nipah virus in Kerala, the state health department has placed 425 individuals on the contact list as of July 6, 2025. The highest number of contacts, 228, are in Malappuram district, followed by 110 in Palakkad and 87 in Kozhikode, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George.

The announcement comes after the confirmation of a Nipah virus case in the state earlier this week. As part of efforts to curb the virus’s spread, health officials are conducting extensive surveillance, contact tracing, and distributing informational pamphlets about the virus’s symptoms and prevention methods among the community.

One individual on the contact list has tested negative for the Nipah virus so far, but remains under observation due to their close proximity to a confirmed case. The health department is urging the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and follow the recommended precautions.

This latest development in Kerala follows a series of outbreaks of the Nipah virus across several countries in recent years, underscoring the importance of continued monitoring and prevention efforts. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for increased global cooperation to combat the spread of infectious diseases like the Nipah virus.

NDTV.com will continue to provide updates on this developing story as more information becomes available. For now, residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed and follow any guidelines issued by local health authorities.
