In a move that recognizes the enduring influence of Malayalam cinema, second-year undergraduate students at Maharaja’s College in Kochi are now studying the works and contributions of legendary actor Mammootty as part of their revised four-year B.A. Honours curriculum.

According to Kerala Kaumudi, this academic focus on Mammootty’s career underscores his significant impact on Malayalam cinema, both culturally and artistically. The revised syllabus emphasizes the importance of studying the evolution of local culture and social movements in Kochi, including the stories of prominent figures like Prof. P.S. Velayudhan who led SNDP Yogam as both president and general secretary.

The new curriculum acknowledges Prof. P.S. Velayudhan’s multifaceted influence on academia and society by featuring his life story in the paper titled ‘Thinkers and Social Reformers.’ This inclusion highlights his decades-long service and impact on Kerala, which resonates with Mammootty’s own career that spans over four decades.

The news comes as the Malayalam film industry continues to garner international recognition for its compelling narratives and outstanding performances. With the inclusion of Mammootty in the curriculum, students will gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of Malayalam cinema and its connection to local culture and history.

It is essential to note that this revised four-year B.A. Honours curriculum is part of a broader effort to foster greater appreciation for the arts and humanities in Kerala’s educational institutions. As the new academic year begins, students across the state can look forward to engaging with influential figures like Mammootty and Prof. P.S. Velayudhan, whose stories continue to shape Kerala’s cultural landscape.
