KOCHI – In an unprecedented move, the Kerala High Court on Friday questioned the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over its objections to the use of ‘Janaki’ in an upcoming Malayalam film and the need for modifying its title. The petition was filed by Cosmos Entertainments, a Tamil Nadu-based firm, seeking a directive to the CBFC to issue the censor certificate for the movie titled “JSK-Janaki Vs State.”

During the hearing of the case, Justice N Nagaresh expressed his disapproval over the objections raised by the CBFC regarding the use of ‘Janaki,’ stating that it was a common name used everywhere. He further questioned how the name could affect a particular section of society as it did not belong to any specific caste or religion.

The film in question, “JSK-Janaki Vs State,” stars Union Minister Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles. Produced by Cosmos Entertainments, the movie has been facing obstacles in obtaining a censor certificate due to the objections raised by the CBFC over the use of ‘Janaki’ in its title.

The court has now directed the CBFC to clarify its position on this matter and justify the need for modifying the film’s title. The next hearing is scheduled for July 15, 2025. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the Malayalam film industry as well as the broader debate on artistic freedom in India.
