Thiruvananthapuram, June 27: As the monsoon season continues to bring heavy rains to Kerala, the state is on high alert with rising river levels and dam shutters being opened. In a move aimed at managing water inflow, the shutters of Lower Periyar, Kallarkutty, Ponmudi, and Malankara dams in Idukki have been opened due to increasing water levels. The Banasura Sagar Dam shutters were also opened at 10 am in Wayanad on Monday.

Authorities have ordered the closure of educational institutions in several regions as they prepare for more heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of flash floods over the next few days. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has also cancelled several bus services in affected areas.

According to reports from Onmanorama, the rising water levels have caused flooding in several rivers including Muthirapuzhayar, Thodupuzha–Muvattupuzha, and Kaliyar. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety.

The decision to open dam shutters was taken as reservoirs neared their full capacity due to continuous rainfall in the catchment areas. This is not an unusual occurrence during the monsoon season, but the authorities are urging people living near rivers and dams to remain vigilant and follow any instructions issued by local administrations.

In a related development, the Kerala government has requested the central government for additional financial aid to tackle the ongoing flood situation. The state has already suffered significant damage in previous years due to heavy flooding, and the authorities are taking all necessary measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents.

As the rains continue to lash Kerala, residents and tourists are urged to remain safe and follow any instructions issued by local administrations. For live updates on the flood situation, please visit Onmanorama or The Print, which have been providing regular updates on this developing story.
